PETER’S FARM ROSÉ VEAL HAS BETTER LIFE LABEL

Peter’s Farm Veal, sourced from rosé calves, has the Better Life (Beter Leven) certification label given by the Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals. This indicates that our veal meets extra high standards for animal welfare.

Peter’s Farm has produced veal in a unique, animal-friendly manner since 1997. Calves on a Peter’s Farm live together in herds. A natural living environment is combined with maximum care and attention from the farmer for each calf. As of 2023, Peter’s Farm also has a husbandry farm with rosé calves, with the Better Life certification label from the Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals. The most important pillars of Peter’s Farm are: Quality, Animal Welfare, Traceability, Food Safety and Transparency.

Quality

Peter’s Farm Rosé Veal stands for quality and tenderness with a special taste experience. Our veal also has a pleasant texture. It is rich in vitamins and minerals and low in sodium. Moreover, veal is easily digestible and particularly versatile to prepare. Peter’s Farm pays close attention to the quality, packaging and labelling of every product. Naturally, extensive service and provision of information form part of the Premium Veal brand.

Animal welfare

Calves are kept in herds of around 20-40 animals. For the first six weeks, calves are fed milk, supplemented with fibrous feed, chopped straw or hay and fresh drinking water. After that, calves receive unlimited fibrous roughage with chopped straw, which stimulates natural ruminant behaviour that benefits animal welfare. In the first weeks, calves are given supplementary drinking water, after which the calves have access to fresh drinking water all day. This allows each calf to develop its own biorhythm. The design of the stalls promotes herd behaviour.

At a Peter’s Farm, the calves are free to choose whether and when to feed, and are free to ruminate, stand, wander around, lie down, play or sleep. The stalls are spacious, with sufficient daylight. There are skippyballs that the calves can play with and brushes have been placed along the walls for them to rub against. Rubber teats on the wall allow calves to satisfy their natural need to suckle.

The Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals has acknowledged Peter’s Farm’s distinctive plus points and has given the Better Life certification label to calves reared in the rosé husbandry system. This label guarantees more animal welfare as there is more space for the animals to move, run, play and lie down. The Society for the Protection of Animals regards the freedom of social contact facilitated by consistently large herds, rest and the ability to engage in self-grooming behaviour, as well as toys for distraction, as unique qualifications.

Traceability

In addition to legally required labelling on packaging, all Peter’s Farm Products feature a farm code. This makes it possible to trace any purchase of Peter’s Farm Veal back to the farm of origin at any time. The farm code shown on the packaging can be entered on the Peter’s Farm website. By doing so, all information about the farmer and their family can be obtained. That includes information about the calves’ feed and about the type of husbandry. The QR code on the packaging also grants direct access to information about Peter’s Farm for smartphones and tablets.

Food Safety

Peter’s Farm uses the Safety Guard integrated quality system. Safety Guard ensures food safety and animal welfare throughout the entire veal production chain. The system is set up to meet high global food safety requirements.

The quality and food safety of Peter’s Farm Veal is constantly monitored. All raw materials are carefully sampled and checked. Once approved, they are released for production, registered and archived. This enables full tracking and tracing. Peter’s Farm has implemented a unique DNA Guarantee Programme. A DNA sample is taken from each calf, making each individual piece of veal quickly and precisely traceable – not just to the farm but also to the individual calf.

Transparency

Peter’s Farm strives for transparent policies and open communication. That is why it would like to offer any interested parties a look at what farm life is like at a Peter’s Farm. With its open door days, anyone who is interested can see for themselves how the calves live in an environment of respect and good care. Visitors are shown around the farm by the veal farmer. With the Peter’s Farm Live webcam on the website, you can even take a direct look inside a husbandry. The website also features some delicious veal recipes.
