I've wanted to be a farmer since I was I child. In 2003, I took over my parents' farm and immediately started making preparations to switch to Peter's Farm. A new cowshed was built where the calves are kept in herds of 40. I raise calves in accordance with the conditions of the Beter Leven label. The calves are fed unlimited amounts of maize, straw and feed concentrates. This meets particularly high standards of animal welfare.
Besides farming, I have my job as an industrial electrical engineer four days a week. I also keep some sheep, suckler cows, young cattle and bulls on the farm. The fact that I can combine all these activities is partly due to the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) used for the first eight weeks of start-up.
I get help during start-up from my brother and the neighbourhood. Being a young farmer, I am still developing. Although the cowshed has enough solar panels to meet energy needs, my wish list still includes the purchase of a forage silo. I am also looking at installing DHW collectors. I see this as a logical step. In my opinion, sustainability and Peter's Farm are two sides of the same coin.
