Gerritsen family

Our family business is a few generations old. In 2005, we took it over from my parents. Prior to that, I had worked for seven years with them in a partnership, during which time we also made the switch to Peter's Farm. We had been rearing calves since 1975, but when we were introduced to this very animal-friendly system, the decision to switch over was taken quickly and easily.

Peter's Farm is an ideal branch within our company

Peter's Farm is a farming method that is not only good for the welfare of the animal, but also for the farmer. It gives you a lot of contact with the calves. We also have two stalls of rearing hens, from chicks to laying hens. The difference in approach is striking. You can see chickens more as a couple, but a calf is an individual animal. In late 2006, we built a new stall according to Peter's Farm principles. We did most of the work ourselves. DIY is one of our biggest hobbies. This stall gives the calves plenty of space to move and laze around, and unlimited access to roughage and water. Our neighbour and brother-in-law also has a Peter's Farm, and we help each other out where necessary.

My parents live nearby and are still active in the business. Furthermore, we are always looking for things that can optimise the business and make our work easier.  We are currently looking at the possibility of placing solar panels on the roof of the barn to help ensure our future as a successful business, with Peter's Farm as a sustainable factor.
